Hi all.
I finally got the inverter from that Compaq laptop to power up so I can now experiment.

These inverters seem to operate at a much higher frequency than a conventional CCFL driver and due to the ceramic isolation barrier are much less likely to be fried by returning spikes.

Will keep you posted. FWIW the inverter I used was a Tokin INVR-052 and you connect pins 1 and 2 to +9 to 15V, pins 3 and 4 to GND and the remaining pins to V+ using a 100 ohm resistor (it looks like they are possibly logic level switch for enable and PWM)

I read about these piezoelectric transformers. They are quite simple ( a quartz bar, electric excited, forming inside stationary waves, and converting the piezoelectric oscillations into electricity). They can be used to obtain high voltage, with a big in/out impedance. For AF frequencies (10-20 kHz) the randament is aprox 50%.

....I didnt keep one in my hands ever though.

Hi Vasil.

FWIW Digikey stock the raw transformers as well as the inverters (wish I'd found out before spending $$$ on a new inverter for that Vaio)

If you decide to get some please let me know as I'm after some for research purposes.

My idea is to try connecting several in series via diodes to get the 27 or so kV directly without a big heavy multiplier.

Alternatively, running two transformers out of phase (invert input signal from one unit to feed a second) would allow me to drive a two phase multiplier (like the Blaze Labs one) for more power using those 27pF 3KV inverter capacitors.

Stay tuned- the possibility of a self contained Lifter is much more likely.
