I have been corresponding with a German HV enthusiast who is a stonemason who remarkably makes his own transformers. He has sent me a number of low quality images including this amazing series of a 3 phase JL. I have copied some of his email.

"Hi Peter,
what is 4HV? Is it an organisation for high voltage presentations?
Before I was without a work, I worked in a plastic-factory.
There I was able to create barrels and boxes made of
plastics, like PVC, PPH, PE and so on.
Now I can´t cover my transformers in such plastic boxes
anymore.
If an interested man would to buy such a transformer,
i could not cover it in an oil box for security.
In the future, in two or three months, I will work as
stone meason, thats my learned profession.
The plastic factory was only a bridge from the time
before to the time now.
But my hobby to make transformers is 20 years old.
High voltage transformers to 30 kV can be built without
an oil-isolation. It only needs to boil the coils in wax.
But it is not save to turn on a Teslacoil, course the
high frequency kills the secondary coil, if its not isolated
in oil.

The constructions are very easy.I will send you a con-
struction of my three phase transformer.
If you can help me to present my transformers,
why not?

Thanx, Matthias"

"Three phase current transformer. Input: 400V/ca 62 A
output: 3 x 40 kV - Three ladders. Transformer in oil.
I always build my transformers myself, course to buy such
a transformer is very difficult and expensive.
Have a good time,
Matthias Kallenberger"

"Hi Peter,
it is difficult to make good fotos in the dark cellar, but I have made some for you. I allways have a little bit fear to switch on this powermachine. I allways be filled up with adrenalin.
Do you know, what I mean
Have a good time, Matthias"

I don't think it is him. His transformers are much larger. I'll post the rest later.

I'm wondering where he (and others) gets 10's of kW of power... some large generators maybe?

Here are some plans (unfortunately, low res pdf) of the 3 phase trandformer.
No idea about his power but I will ask him.

He has a start up site but no HV info on it yet.
