After some dissapointing results and some fiddling i actually got the first tower to work. the powersupply is not the best choice but is what i had on hand at the moment. a simple zvs driver at 45V with a small wimpy flyback transformer. i could not measure the output voltage exactly but its around 25 to 28kV.
after few hours of adjusting spark gaps and changing resistors (from 140k per string to 450k) i got nice results and a twice per second bang :)))
here are two pics showing the marx in action. Ground rod around 38 to 42 cm away (its pending cause of kinetic spark energy or ion or something) :P
50cm should be possible for one tower, so im looking for a decent powersupply :PP

Whoa, that is cool. I can see corona spraying from it on all sides, though, not just from the spark electrode. So maybe some guard rings on the tower might help save that energy for a longer main spark.

Congrats Martin, that is awesome. You although see now that big resistors have purpose. I'd gladly trade bigger power supply/slower firing for larger sparks.
Some copper wire guard rings around it might also save some energy, but I don't see an elegant way to mount them now.
