i use 141k between each stage (3x 47K in series) hope that the marx will charge faster with them, cause i had problems in my previous marx using big resistors in the range of megaohms. well, i want to use a nst with 4x cw multiplier to get around 32 kV for the caps. sure i´ll limit the current to some mA.. total overkill i know, but it looks great :P

I like how it looks like those really big marxes. In the picture the gaps look kind of far apart for 32KV. How big is the spark gap?

I've never built a Marx Generator, so maybe someone with practical experience can give the real answer,
but I believe that Marx generators work better when the uv from one spark gap helps to trigger the next
so if you could arrange a clear line-of-sight for the spark gaps that MAY be better.

yeah, i heard of that and its right that the uv helps triggering or pre ionizing the next gap and further but, when the first gap fires (which is the trigger gap) the voltage on the second gap is twice the Uin so 64 kv. with or without the uv the second gap will surely fire.

And Myke. I tested the sparklenght for a 25 and 30kv arc and came up with 2,5 to 3,2cm. the gaps are arranged to 2,8cm but i can adjust every brass ball +-5mm so i can adjust the gaps roughly between 2,8 and 2cm. i think thats enough room to play with. if this fails for some reason i can add a second nut on the rod to mount the gap another 6mm closer. so i thought about the gap distance and planned that i might change some things. the 3 stage test setup will tell tommorow or over the week though :P

Just thought i would offer a tip for people who cant source brass balls. I use ball bearings. I heat to red heat slowly to ensure deep penetration. Then allow them to cool at room temperature to anneal(soften).

This will allow you to drill and tap. Just go slow and hard with the drill bit with lube and it works fine.

Cheers

Colin

My threaded rods arrived today so i had to start.

heres what i came up with today. 12 stages almost finished except some spark gaps and resistors.

Beautiful, I just *love* your style Reaching.

Have you ran a test setup?

Here are a few pics with closeup of the sparkgaps

I hope I'm wrong, but the space between spark gap electrodes does not look to be
twice the gap between dome-nut and spark gap electrode. (twice the voltage)
I hope it doesn't arc over in the wrong places.
