I just checked it and discovered that the fuse IS on the input side. Sneaky. I will keep this in mind.
My scoope is capable of INVERT+ADD and I will probably try that next in order to save money.
Some of those Chinese variacs come with really shady construction!
I hear GE makes benchmark variacs... what are your experiences with these compared to others?

I wouldn't really bother with GE Powerstat Staco or General Radio Variacs, unless you can find one at a swapmeet, they're just too expensive compared to the Chinese ones. What I'm saying is just fix the wiring so its safe and you'll be fine. e.g. make sure the hot is fused, make sure the switch disconnects the hot insted of the neutral, those kinds of things.
