Core is like this (i have 6 of these, one disassembled):

That core looks sort of pity to saw in half.. but I guess you could use it as is, it doesn't need lot of turns to do the work.

I have already disassembled one without sawing, i took laminations apart.

You can make a choke without a core also. I have two 20mh chokes on my MIDI coils that are just made from 14 AWG wound (approx. 500ft) on a plastic spool.

The inductive reactance XL = 2 *PI* f* L
So, at 60 Hz with 20mH XL = 7.54 ohms

At 120 VAC that limits each coil to about 16A.

The 500ft-spool-of-wire trick does work, but you're definitely better off with a laminated or bundle-of-wire core, not just because you can move it to adjust the current, but because it means using a lot fewer turns to achieve the desired inductance, and hence a lot less wire (less DC resistance). I once played with using two 500ft spools of #10 in series with a 15kVA pig. Applied 240V and was pushing about 40A. The spools of wire together had about 1.5 Ohms DC resistance, though, so as you can imagine things heated up real quick!

My actual coiling projects have tended to stick around the 1-3kVA level, and for this I've just used a 120V 45A Luxtrol variac. Unmodified, it'll pass about 30A with 1/3 the windings engaged. Never had any surprises with it, and it's absurdly convenient. I bought it off a local guy for $80. Seemed hard to beat.

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

I did some tests with old transformer core and now i got what i wanted :)

This is very rough prototype:
Link2

Tomorrow i will rewind it with 2x wires in parallel like my first ballast was done. Now it has 105 turns of AWG12 wire and ¨I¨ removed current is about 25A and 'I' completely in place current is 0.2A. I will make final winding so that maximum current is around 80A (I removed)
