I saw something on CNN about police chases. They mentioned that the government is working on a device that can be shot onto the surface of the vehicle in pursuit and the energy pulse will stall/disable the engine. Does anyone know anything about the development of this device?

I was watching a show were they had a small vehicle that could be deployed from a patrol car that had some electrodes to fixor the cars electronics...

With new cars there are enough computers it shouldn't take too much of an emp to kill them...

Thats why my old 68 mustang rocks! Not many electronics accept a radio thats broken and a few lights, hehe. These new cars continue to suck, not only are they getting much more complicated, they are covering the engine in more and more plastic making it a huge pain to repair the engine yourself=huge bucks for repair shops >:0

Not to mention people continue to slam diesel engines without knowing what they're talking about.

And now tell me, why does "hybrid" suddenly seem to carry the implication of "petrol/electric". What happened to diesel/electric?

Keep it on topic please. If you want to discuss the merits of petrol vs. diesel, or '68 Mustangs vs. '05 Hondas, you are welcome to start a thread in the chatting board for it. This thread is about disabling cars with EMP.

I remember a few systems that appeared a couple of years back. The only detail I remember was a flattish Marx generator on wheels that was fired out of a pursuit vehicle, ran under the front of the target vehicle, and dispensed an EMP right into the engine systems.

However, there are two major problems with this. The first is that car electronics are all very well shielded, as required by EMC laws. The second is that many older cars don't actually have any mission critical electronics at all.

Not sure how safe it would be though. There is a big push now to end high speed pursuits period. I believe LA already has adopted this practice and is planning on shooting a GPS locator on the cars and letting them go - retrieving them later. Mostly for the public's safety.

The show I was watching demonstrated the application of the projectile GPS locator. Unfortunately, all they did was mention that the "disabling" device was still in development.

EMPing a car to disable? How boring is that! I much prefer the Duke Nukem standing back and firing an RPG into the vehicle approach. cheesey Or maybe a big harpoon! What do we care if the drug dealing/murdering perp gets hurt? We'll just have to feed him for the next 20 years. Maybe a bit harsh, but consider we spend an average of $24,000 per prisoner per year to keep these creeps alive. I personally would prefer a new stoplight.

No really, that was the first thing I thought. Crooks are probably going to have a piece of crap that it isn't going to work on. But there was something on TV about how the EMP machine could kill these too. Unfortunately, I've slept since then so I can't be much help. There was something though; but it just made it stall, didn't kill it IIRC.

Steve Conner was very nice and explained what the topic was, since no one took notice this thread is now closed.
