CW Multiplier and NST

I have a 15 kV NST transformer. I have been using half of it to power a CW Multiplier. That is 7.5 kV. How must I arrange the transformer if I would like to take full advantage of the 15 kV? Is it as simple as using both high voltage terminals? I read somewhere that it is possible to remove the centre tap. Would this help?

Thanks,

Matthew

If you just ignore the center tap and use both HV terminals it would work. There's really no reason to remove the center tap either, most NSTs are potted anyway. You will need caps rated for at least 30kV, too.

If you are using the full wave layout CW multiplier you will be using the center tap, however. Otherwise it can be ignored.

And BTW how many stages do you have? Any pics?

You can take advantage of the antiphase 7.5kV outputs to make a full wave CW, but that's not going to get you significantly higher voltage, just higher output current and less output ripple.

You can't take full advantage of the 15kV to ground to make a half wave CW with 15kV AC input, as the centre tap of your NST is grounded.

Your NST outupt terminals are good for 7.5kVAC, then a bit for safety margin, expected input surges, production tolerances and a bit for luck. So you actually stand a fighting chance of getting 15kV to withstand on one of the output terminals. The picture does not look so good for the core though. The centre tap windings are expected to be at ground, so have only been insultaed to withstand a 1500V flash test, representing the sort of surge that the mains may deliver occasionally. So grounding one output terminal and taking the winding centre tap to 7.5kVAC with respect to core, case and ground is almost certain to end in tears.

Thanks for all the advice.

I will take apart my present multiplier. It just used both HV terminals connected to the multiplier. Four stages, Caps rated for 64 000 Volts and diodes rated for 40 000.
I will now go for a 10 stage multiplier using half (7.5 kV) of the NST. How does 32000 volts rating for the caps and 29 000 for the diodes sound? I will post pics once I get this thing together.

Cheers and Thanks Again,

Matthew
