Thank you all for your replies. CT2, I've tried to make a multiplier, but after some zapping, something died. Well, after a while I got new cameras and did the same once again. Same problem. Strange, isn't it? I'm now going to try the 555 thing, and I will report here about the results.

Yeah if you make the multiplier too big then you can kill the caps/diodes. You need a limiting resistor on the output to stop that from happening. I did the same thing you did, made a big multiplier and then it made one nice big spark and that was it, had to check all the caps/diodes to see what failed, removed the failed component and replaced it and then it happend again. So yeah just use a resistor on the output if your going to short it.

hey, the transformer and a multiplier with limiting resistor could be used for an ion ray gun, or am I wrong?

Yes, except ion spray gun would be a more accurate description.

Yep, it works spark, you can feel a good amount of air flow from it too.

Hi again, all! :)
Here's some pictures of my finished micro ion spray gun:
Electronics
So here are the electronics (disposable camera transformer with its driver and a 6-stage CW and a 10M limiting resistor on its output).
It charges to around 4000 volts, and you can feel a strange "wind" flow from it. It can also stick a small piece of paper to the wall for half a minute.
Zap
And, of course, some arcs :)
These are really 4mm long.
Side
And side view.
It simply has a grounding wire in its handle, so it's grounded to its user.
What do you think about it? And what kind of experiments could this be used for?

So small! I wanted to make one of these a while ago, but never did. I had a .pdf with things to try once, but I can't find it. You might find some suggestions here. Link2

Don't spray those ions too long, it creates ozone which can easily give you a massive headache.

Yep, I know that, although the device isn't too powerful.
Now I posted better info, better pics and some video on the projects board here
