I have noticed that on SSTC's (Disregard DRSSTC's), you guys put a small capacitor in series with the primary on your bridges. What does this achieve, and how do I calculate capacitor specs?

Typically, in power supplies this would act as a DC blocking capacitor used to prevent core walking and saturation on transformers. Remember, that if the drive is uneven, you may get the core to "walk" and not reset every other cycle which could cause the core to saturate. However, with tesla coils, you really cannot saturate an air core transformer.
However, you may still want to use a DC blocking capacitor to prevent DC bias on the primary, although some will argue that its not required.

Right. And again, with an air core, you really don't have a possibility of the transformer saturating, but some would argue that DC bias present on the primary could be a problem.

In my H-bridge circuit I tried using a resonant parallel primary circuit that was tuned to the secondary thinking that the circulating current and resultant magnetic field would be more efective in transformation to voltage, but I found that a series primary circuit produced lots of output. I think this is because voltage is high and current is low in a series resonant circuit. What does anybody think?

The capacitor also serves to help if parts of your halfbridge/fullbridge fail. Namely, the insulation doesn't melt off your primary and catch fire from being shorted across the mains =)
