Eye safety is real important but it is decidedly no fun to view a laser that you can't see. Aim it at some wood which will not give a specular reflection and still burn nicely. Do test shots with glasses on to ensure that the setup is ok ie nothing can be bumped or dropped into the beam and the wood can't fall over showing a mirror behind. Once you have a feel for the shot effects, and seeing how the room lights up around the beam things are likely to be safe. I also avoid looking at a big flash directly, look off to the side a little. Personally, I would be more concerned with 4kJ firing off next to me. If that flashlamp is stressed in its mounting or old an explosion could be nasty.
