Hi,
I want to built a solid state tesla coil with an input power of 1kW (from mains). I think a full brigde design with IRFP460 will handle that power but thats not the point. What I am looking for is a good coil design; Maybe somebody can post how big the coil should be for best performance and which sparklengh I can expect. I've already tested the bridge on a l=40cm d=8cm coil with lower power and got 15cm streamer.

For maximum arc length, you'll want to build a pulsed double resonant system such as a DRSSTC. However, the IRFP460's won't do as switching components for this type of system.

I think I would suggest a coil of 14 inches tall and 4 inches diameter, with a small to medium toroid, wound with ~30 or 32 wire. Mine is wound with 35, and it has melted a bit too often to suit my liking. However, you need thin enough wire or enough turns to bring the frequency down into a good range/and or a topload. With 1000W interupted, I guess spark length just depends on how much you push the mosfets, but I would GUESS (I use 40N30s (extras are still on ebay :) ) maybe around 12 inches ??? Not really sure though.

yep im also wondering how much one could push (normal) i dont remember seeing one kW SSTC... Probably high supply voltage is needed and strong semiconductors, and goal is obivously to make CW system.

Those irfp460s wont work at 1kw...Also, at 1kw your bound for a few feet of output, not 12in. My old drsstc used 40n60 miniblocks and did 3 feet(very inneffecient design)You ought to see what kinda parts you can get and then go from there.

I was talking about a normal SSTC, not a DRSSTC. Mine does 16 inches at 2000W, interupted. I was just trying to tell him waht he could do with what he had, yet for any power level, a DRSSTC will make much longer sparks.

That will be my next project

The diameter of 4 inches (~10cm) is not much bigger than my current coil; I thought the sparklengh is growing with the size of the coil. What do you mean with a good range for the frequency. My coil runs at ~500kHz - is that low enough?

Why not? The supply voltage for the bridge are 320V --> current @ 1kW : 3,125A That parameters are all below the maximum specification.

Maximum specifications for a device are just that. Also, they are typically rated for a specified junction temperature of the device. You can run them at 1kW (as a bridge), but your cooling scheme needs to be right on.

I can also state that 500khz is brutal even on irfp460's. Ive got a half bridge right now, they get hot in seconds, literally. Adding an interruptor is sure to help, but just wont be good for high current pulses in drsstc mode.
