Wow, that looks like one good camera over there.

My camera sucks on large scale, but I'm posting this pic in attempt to persuade people into _not_ using the 2N3055 as their driver.

... What kind of setup creates such an arc? I can see there's quite a few rounds in the primary atleast.

Thanks for the comments, those were pretty much the first pics I took of the arcs. But for the camera part, sorry to disappoint you all but as you can find out my camera isn't something to be called amazing. Sony Cybershot DSC-W1. The pics were even taken with the most basic automatic mode. :)

Hey, I still think it's a darn good camera. Heck, I can't focus on anything that is less than half a meter from my lens!

I like to power stuff directly from mains even at cost of hard switching.
Some people also love to tune their transformers to resonance, although I don't see benefit in it.

The two most powerful drivers (which can supply more power than the flyback can take tongue ) are the "zvs" and half/fullbridge drivers. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but I prefer the halfbridge driver.

Uh, right. You people build some insane stuff. I'm not willing to go that far just yet. :)

Just for the sake of darkness, here's few more taken with longer exposure times (1-5 seconds) while waving the HV wire around.

Very cool, magical looking pics.

You can use bipolar transistors and TL494 if you like, as well as royer circuit if you prefer low voltage input.

Surely anything is more fruitful than trying to get a 2N3055 single-core blocking-oscillator to work. (I would say that is just pointless).

Sure, it's all about how much the transformer will stand before it blows itself up.

how do they fail? do they just arc over internally and stop working, or do they explode?
