The core is made of two parts. The core spacer is in between the two parts and creates a gap. It is usually made of plastic.

They allow the core to store energy, and yes you should put them back in.

Few days messing with burning lasers (take that you malfunctioning Sony DVD-burner), and now retrying my flyback.

Changed to 12V 11A powersupply and now the flyback stopped doing that crackling sound it did with the 12V 1.6A powersupply and changed into hissing mode, but still no whine/arcing.

How critical is the primary/feedback winding to get it working? Should it be done with enameled wire or should any small enough wire do?

And is it safe to make the HV wire touch the 0 wire to start an arc, or could it blow something up from the supplying end of the circuit? What's the difference in keeping the 0 wire floating versus connecting it to the ground of the powersupply circuit?

The feedback winding can be done with anything, with the primary you just need to make sure that the wire is big enough that it doesn't melt .

Yes you can short the output. When you float the secondary, the output could be at 0v and the 0v terminal be a -30kv, which can be good (say, if you need a -30kv supply) but is usually bad because the 0v terminal isn't insulated nearly as well as the hv terminal (so you run the risk of arking to the core), and it means that all of the wires connected to the secondary need to be treated as hot.

A-ha, the damn thing was working after all. The arc is just so faint in brightness compared to the one created by the monitor flyback that I couldn't see it in sunshine (yes I test my stuff outside, just to be safe). I can stretch the arc about 2cm and it's hissing quite nicely, without that annoying whine I've heard in all the videos I've seen.

The funny thing is, while I'm on a concrete floor, and the 0 wire isn't even touching the ground, the HV wire is gathering all kinds of small particles from the ground due to static. And if I place the 0 wire on top of a CDR and the HV wire is in the air not touching the ground, the 0 wire is still slowly frying the CDR. :)

Just to show my results from the basic stuff... Maybe it's time to start looking into the zvs.
