Have anyone else tried something like this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqgxQG1PyfM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egOda1dKNKU

It was really loud bang (i was suprised how loud..) And there was only about 3000V in there while capacitor could handle 4200V... ;)

ok... first off, for your chicken stick / charging stick you should use a piece of PVC pipe or something similarly non-conductive. at high voltages wood is a decent conductor. Looks like you live in a humid/moist environment...better safe than sorry.

anyways... I've used bigger caps to blow up smaller caps.... on purpose.

And of course exploding wire, on a tiny scale (120v 10,000mfd)

but no...not a potato.

looks fun, if a bit messy.

I think dry wood (that piece was stored indoors for years) is safe with 3000V, but not much more!

I plan on trying similar acts tomorrow during a 4th of july party. Ive got a 5kJ maxwell cap but i will probably limit to 3kJ for safety. I will see about taking pictures and video when possible. Im surprised that little cap is able to blast away the potato so nicely smile.

I was suprised too :) You must take lot of pictures and video. I think you could blow away something much bigger, like water melon :D

It's pity that those High-Voltage pulse capacitors are extremely hard to find in here finland, im planning to buy few russian military 5000V(7500V Peak)/40uF caps from ebay.

Edit:

I think that when we are blowing stuff with capacitor, duration of capacitor discharge is more important than capacitors energy. Faster discharge means more current going through potato :)

Now imagine that defibrillator capacitor is IN a defibrillator, the bolts are two plates... and that potato is your stopped heart...

By the way, what is the smaller capacitor on the right side of the video for?

That is microwave capacitor including microwave diode, which is used to rectify MOT's output, cap itself is not used.
