It sounds like he started building and populating the chassis before he'd finished designing the whole circuit (a man after my own heart!) Having built the /100 to get Hz, he then got to the BCD counter and segment decoder and found he'd run out of space, tubes or enthusiasm to drill more big holes (he had already added two extra lines of tubes, in addition to what he'd first thought, the straight line down each side), so he whacked in a few silicon diodes to get the job done
A clock and room heater with "valve sound", what more could a person want?

Looking at the number of tubes, I can't blame him for switching to some silicone, either. I toyed with the idea of building just this sort of clock last year, but didn't have the balls (or the budget) for it. My hat is off to the bloke who actually pulled it off!
