So I got myself a slightly used a Westinghouse PT-15, 1750VA rated 120:1 PT from a large transformer supplier. $250 each - I was surprised at the weight of the unit in comparison to the smaller sized GE one - only 85lbs. Westinghouse unit is 100lbs.... and its a monster.
I did a test on the transformer at 7.5 kVA tonight and was pleasantly surprised to find a mere 3 degree change in core temperature after 10 minutes of abuse. I'm very impressed! I can't wait to power up my Tesla Coil with this monster :)

Great! Would love to see a pic! Coincidentally, there's a guy selling 1750VA Westinghouse PTs on eBay right now. He's in OR, and...yikes!!...wants $500 US each for them! $250 CAN is still a lot of $$, but unless they're being junked it's a fair price.

Well Mr.Holmes.... Boundary Electric in Grand Forks BC has great deals on PT units... they have 20:1, 80:1, 120:1, 180:1.... and lots of bizarre units too...
Hey, they are good people to deal with, and they are right on the US border!

This transformer operates much like a 5 kVA PIG unit.... identical winding configuration and secondary resistance (1.4 kOhm)
These trannies pulled 75-80A on 120V --- 8-9 kVA! The arc is pretty nice --- very snappy and quite loud. The transformer never broke a sweat after a few minutes like this. So short runs aren't an issue at high kVA. PT-15s are technically able to run continuous for 2-2.5 kVA, so I could easily expect 5-6 minute runs at 7.5kVA without worry.... and if I had two trannies I could easily series them too. The plate says these units can hold 34.5kV for 1 minute without flashover --- they can hold double their voltage indefinitely and that was tested by the transformer shop a number of years ago - according to a technican who spent years around Westinghouse products!
