I was looking at various methods of driving a igintion coil. I thought that if one connected a diode in line with the 120v AC it would stop every other cycle and pulse power to the coil. How bad of an idea is this? It works kind of. How can i make it better? Thanks
Here are some pictures of my coil and heat sink. Note: I am Remaking the wiring tonight. I made the heat sink on a CNC mill. It is comprised of 8 layers stacked and bolted together with a computer case fan guled to the side.

Using strait halfway rectified mains is a pretty bad idea, because the core in the coil can only store so much energy, so once you have 'charged' it completly, the rest of the energy is just going into heating the coil...
Also, I would be weary of heatsinking the coil like that, as you run a decent chance of having the windings burning up while the outside feels cool. I suppose once it heats up enough you should start to get some convection currents in the oil...

I made the heat sink as a excuse to work on it in class. i am a maching tech student. It take 30 sec - 1 min for the heat in the windings to get to the case anyways. Thus the heat sink only helps to reduce time between firings.

I think you would have to have some way to limit the current to a smaller amount. I would just try to build the light dimmer ignition coil driver if you want sparks easily.

The problem is that there is no large dI/dt, so the output voltage will be far lower than otherwise possible. You need a sudden switch-off of current, which 60hz is extremely slow compared to the time scales im talking about.

Thanks guys I will try to use a light dimmer. The main reason i used the diode idea is the i had an old arcade game power supply that had a pair of diodes on it. And i tried the 555 timer method but failed. I am not the best at soldering (I have very little money my friend had the ignition coil) About what you were saying Steve what range would better?
I am also considering what to do with the capcitiors (220uf @200v)x2 and other part on the power supply.
