Maybe you can buy some HGT1N40N60A4D igbt's if you can afford it, it will surely be more durable then your current setup.

yah well I want to try to get the longest arcs with the smallest package. next I should try MS cheesey no really I have some IGBTs that are better than the 40N60s. they are the SGL160N60UFD they should do the job.

I only lost one leg of the H-bridge so the repair wont be as expensive. I am getting 6 more of the 30N60s and I am getting 3 SGL160N60UFD I already have 1. Those should preform better than the HGT1N40N60A4Ds.

You should replace them all when one dies. I tried replacing only hafl my bridge when only half died and the next time i ran it the other two died. I was using mosfets at the time but maybe the same would apply to IGBT's.

I personally dont believe in this. In my first DRSSTC experiments id only replace the dead IGBT (not all of them). I remember one IGBT had a chip in its case, and that one lasted through *many* failures. I dont believe in semiconductors being "damaged" but still "working" for "a little while". It probably is possible, but i would think the probability is pretty low. Usually a failure will take out a half-bridge because one device fails, and then on the next switching transition the other in the half shorts out the DC supply through it, killing it. The other half-bridge is actually pretty well isolated from the failure since 1) its difficult to severly alter the DC buss voltage, and 2) there is the load impedance between the 2 bridges.

Having a single device fail in a half-bridge might warrant replacing the whole bridge, but i have also had a single device failure and replaced just that device and it worked fine afterward.

yes I also when testing earlier had the same problem of one and of 2 failing and only replaced the dead ones and it worked very well. Thanks for the help I was wondering if a simple dimmer with huge hocky puck SCRs would suffice for this.

Well crap. Ive been replacing them all. Damn thats alot of wasted igbt's sad Weird thing is only the ones on the MMC side fail. Same thing every time. I'll try half this next time. By the way I just got some STGW40NC60WD from Link2 theyre only 3.18 each but theres 30 min quantity.

You threw working IGBT's into bin suprised

No matter if it was good or wrong I would never replace entire bridges as so simply for budgetary reasons.

Chance of semiconductor getting ''damaged'' in reality seem practically nonexistent. Any failure mode has heavily positive feedback and must always lead to complete destruction of device, black and white.

Yeah you're probably right at least with IGBT's. The Mosfets on the other hand did get damaged but appeared to be good since they weren't shorted. I'm so bummed thinking about all the IGBT's I trashed. lol
