ok I dont know what to do I just ran it at full power and lowest BPS and a huge arc over killed all the IGBTs. I dont know how to stop this but I can run it at higher BPS.

Dont do that...

dont run it at full power of high BPS because by running it at high BPS there is no arcing over. I don't know what you mene not to do.

I think he's saying don't run it at full power with low BPS.

Correct, Goldsphere.

You can try raising the secondary even further if you really want it to work at any BPS at full power. But the more you lower the coupling, the more performance you might sacrifice.

Wait, so running a low bps at full power is bad even with a short on time? Like maybe 80 to 100uS? I was doing this the other day and I blew my igbt's. I just assumed my primary needed more than 4 turns.

ok so I got my IGBTs and then I blew them but I did get some pics and I think the reason I blew them looking at my pics is even though I had ground arcs the over current limiter didn't go off so I think I forgot to set it. but I did get some nice pics of arcs to a target 68" away!

Whee, nice work Rocketry76. Too bad it blew up, but it looks like you got some pretty impressive results first... Are you using TO-247 packaged devices?

HI steve

Yes, it looks like those are TO247 IGBT's, HGTG30N60's. I never expected those to do more than 1 meter, ever. I use same IGBT's but am too chicken to draw the coil into garage and fire it up since TEA laser beams started shooting out of my bridge. I haven't got moral support from anyone, and I was assured that I would just do some 20inch sparks and blow the IGBT's. That would be it.

If this results are true then it's probably among best ever for this packages.

I will be purchasing another 8 of the IGBTs and this time have the current limiter set so I will only make up to 68" arcs because when it failed I was pushing it to hit a target 72" away. it did make one arc to it but then failed.I dont understand why I caint see the arcs in the pic but they were there. Also those IGBTs before I was on my (push it as much as possible spree) I ran it for 5min at 90% AC in and fairly high BPS and ON time. the IGBTs were very cold! The only thing that warmed up was the variac. I was thinking of also trying it with some other IGBTs I had I only have 2 of them but they are a similar cacing but 2X larger and are rated for 350A pulse and 160A standard operation. they cost $30 each so I will have to save for these.
