If you have great difficulty finding an NST, you could try an OBIT (Oil Burner Ignition Transformer)
A common output would be 5-0-5 kV @ 20mA rms. OK for 0.5m arcs.

The drawback with an OBIT is that they are usually rated for one in three minutes duty, not continuous. (33% ED)

Whether NST or OBIT be careful NOT to get the new electronic type, old-fashioned heavy iron and copper is required.

what kind of places would have OBIT's? i would buy a nst on ebay, but since they weigh so much, postage costs way more than the nst. i have allready got 2 from one guy, but neither of them worked. i don't want to annoy him again, and don't really have much time or money to fix them, so that's why i am asking

A heating shop, someone that sells parts for oil or gas powered burners/heaters/boilers etc.
eBay should be good for an OBIT since a typical OBIT is much lighter than a typical NST.

Remember - check what you are buying - do not get an 'electronic' OBIT or NST.
