Here's a question you can probably answer for me, EVR: what's that nifty aerial view composed from? Is it an on-board camera? Live satellite pictures? How do they rotate the camera around just prior to the explosion?

Well, I can't say for sure, but it looks like something like an F17 doing a high altitude support run. The video is deff. from the on-board targeting system. If the quality were better you'd see reticles on almost everything that's moving in that frame.
The camera rotation is when the pilot goes directly over them. You can see the slow approach then as they get closer the observed speed is greater, then they pass over the "targets" and the camera rotates 180 degrees to compensate.
If you go to you can usually find high quality military engagement videos, if you're into that stuff.

I don't know what an F17 is, but that video was likely from a targeting pod on an F16 doing close air support. Perhaps you meant an F117 but that's highly unlikely since it is daylight out(as evidenced by the CCD in the upper line), and they don't do CAS. I doubt you would see reticles. It is from a targeting pod guiding an LGB(See the flashing 'L'?), not a gun sight. The guy on the radio would be the JTAC requesting the strike.

Forgive my hippie ignorance, but what exactly does a targeting pod do? Does it recognise objects using image processing and lock onto them? Or does the pilot need to tell it where to target, and it compensates the motion of the plane to keep targeting that same spot on the ground?

ah yeah, I missed a one, I was thinking of the F-117 Night Hawk...
but an F17 wouldn't be too far off - there are many F/A-18s over there, and they're built up from the F17 Cobra.
And isn't the F117 designated F but really a CAS attack craft (usually designated FA or A)? It can engage air-to-air but it's mostly used as a tactical bomber or ground attack aircraft.
..and the targeting pod is a sensor array that includes laser and optical targeting devices. They're usually isolated in the belly of the plane in a little pod that looks a bit like a security camera dome on steroids. the ones I have seen use a combination of motion tracking, image recognition, laser painter, IFF radio /RFID, FLIR, and manual (operator) targeting. Usually they can "mark" multiple moving targets in the HUD (heads up display) and place a reticle on each of them. They can identify friend or foe vehicles based on profiles in the computer. Some vehicles and troops are wearing RFID/IFF tagging systems. Once the "suggested" targets are identified the operator can select a target or identify a new one.
Bombers can have the aerial profile of a building programmed in and find it from 4 miles up and hit it within 1m accuracy. Assuming nothing goes wrong in the targeting/guidance system.
I don't know what Doug is using for his sources, but if you want to figure out what a targeting pod can do, read the links I provided and do some google searching. Another good reference for general background would be JP 3-09.3
