Looks like I'm in over my head on this one. In case anyone has anymore ideas, the 555 continues to oscillate, and the power vanishes from the 150v tap when the flyback is connected, which explains a lot of why the flyback stops.
But to save you all for more trouble ( and myself ) I think I'll just build a half brigde, driven by a GDT.
All this trouble, just to save buying a mains xfrmr....
EDIT: just saw your post, and it makes perfect sense. So should I go half-brigde or rig up FET protection and run it at 330v?

I ran small SMPS(s) with single mosfets and but11a's at 300V with just backward diode and no problems, flyback is not different much, just gives HV output. I used limiting inductor to avoid blowing transistor if transformer saturates. Used clamp diode + resistor at first but removed later, just heated up and did nothing.
Maybe its even better to use bipolar transistors like but11a etc, they have smaller losses and worked better for me.
