I started building a light dimmer + cap + ignition coil driver, I just got all the stuff I needed in front of me and while reading the manual for the dimmer it occurred that does the polarity matter when using a light dimmer on mains driving an ignition coil? In the manual it shows a diagram with the dimmer connected in a certain way (the connectors for the dimmer are labeled with arrows pointing up or down). Can I just put the dimmer + cap + ignition coil in series after my variac or do I have to worry about which way the plug is in the variac/wall?

Any way is OK. The dimmer is a 2 wire AC device. It would be marginally safer to have the earthed tag of the ignition coil going to the neutral of your mains but no difference to performance.

I built a 2 double ignition driver for 240V -- 120V each phase into a cap and a dimmer. I got at least 120 kV from the set up!!!
