I would like to know what electronic circuit simulator is best for general purpose use. More specifically, however, I am going to build the boost converter described in this topic. Since I have almost no experience with electronics, I will need to test out the circuit before I get all the parts. Is there some type of program that can do this?

B2 Spice is what I have, you only get a trial version (well at the start its not but after 30 days or somethign it is). Still though the trial version is decent enough for small circuits.

This shareware program is reasonable:
Remember that simulation and reality is not the same. Many circuits that work fine in reality will fail to simulate in Spice. If you keep adding parasitic imperfections it usually starts working at some point.

Last time I used multisim, it was very hard to use and not very good at all. That was a couple of years ago though.
How about Proteus ()? I've never tried simulating analog stuff in it, but for digital stuff it blows everything else out of the water. It can simulate ARM microprocessors running linux and it can run a virtual web server on an ethernet PIC that you can connect to through the ethernet port of your PC.

Multisim works but too much work for little results, I use Tina, it has some issues but works for most anything. The one big problem that I haven't figured out is how, or if even possible to combine digital and analog circuits. Eitehr way heres the link I have Tina pro version 6.
