I built up Terry Fritz's Tesla Tuner today. I used a 10 turn pot that I had on hand and various "near enough" parts. Seemed easy enough and oscillates from 6 to 400kHz. My big TC resonates at 41kHz. I remember it was meant to be 37KHz but I ran short of wire. I read off from my frequency meter in my DVM.
I built it because I do a lot of variable topload stuff with different length rotating rods and was looking for a more accurate method of tuning.

Very cool. i had to try it immediatly and i think its a cool way to measure your sec frequency. But for those who have higher requirements or want to be more accuratly its waste time.especially if you dont have a frequency counter.

Nice. I was going to make one too, but the frequency range was too low. Another possibility is to use a fast op-amp as a square wave generator. Unfortunately the only op-amps I had went to 400kHz, about where the 555 topped out too!

I took a little bit of time and made a direct tuning indicator for you guys. You can now see the needle maximum and deflection as you tune. The current meter should be less then 1mA. 1mA seems to be a pretty big current requirement for the standing wave tuning, but a meter of a couple hundred microamps works quite well.
My meter says DC Kilovolts, but its really a 200uA meter FSD.
********** Update ***********
My tuner is coming along with 2 ranges, Lo and Hi. The VCO will cover ~8KHz - 500KHz for the big coils, and 34KHz - 2MHz for you guys doing small coils. It will have a fine tune also! I can't wait to show it off when its done.
