i am very happy that this will all work. i am currently running the igntion coil circuit from 12volt 4 amps. hmmm, a long string of diodes, i am going to see if i have any. around how many do i need? and finally is there any voltage current rating suggested for the diodes?

thanks for all the help, it is very much appreciated smile

The 1N4007 diodes are 1000V and 1Amp, so if your iggy puts out 10Kv you'll need atleast 10 in series, but you will want more than that to be safe. If you can get higher voltage diodes you can use those too.

so here is the finished circuit diagram. Is there any problems you can see?

thanks again for all the help smile smile

100pf is too small to give decent output You really need about 1nf minimum.
No need for bleeders on every stage. Look at the schematic - a resistor across the input will discharge all caps ( until one of your charge R's goes open of course..!)
Flyback will probably be better than an ig.coil, as it already has a suitably rated and insulated rectifier. On a marx the last thing you want is a spiky charge voltage like an ig coil gives as it will increase the chances of pre-triggering.

well i have all ready ordered 20 of those caps and 30 resistors so i will have to make do. but i only intend using 15 caps. since i have a spare caps, would i be able to put one or two on the input to minimize spikes?

your scematic looks good. the best way is to try it. You should get some kind of spark. if it works just add more stages. like mikeselectricstuff sais a flyback circuit will provide more energy to charge caps faster and more stages. my flyback circuit uses 4 transformers and 8 2n3055's in paralell. on ebay you can get 1000 1n4007s for about 15.$

now i am just waiting for the caps and resistors to come from rs, and to buy 8 more diodes. the reason i chose those caps is that they were cheap and didn't want to kill my self on my first marx gen:-D

I've been meaning to build one of these. I didn't realize the parts were so cheap! Definatly show results when everything is working. shades
