Hi gang,
I'm currently working on my first TC and I've got a couple of questions...
I coated my coil in resin yesterday and I got a nice thick layer on there in a single coat. I would have put more on there but my mom was yelling at me for stinking up the house. Is resin a good substitute for the polyurethane? I tried searching on this but I couldnt come up with much. It seems like everybody uses multiple coats of polyurethane, but with the resin, you could get a nice thick coating with only 1 or 2 applications.
Also, Is there a specific height that I should place my secondary at with respect to my primary?

I think yes. Rayer used resin disolved in white spirit for his secondaries and they work well.
If the primary is flat, consider the bottom turn of the secondary on the same plane as the inner turn of the primary, for the start. If racing sparks are present, rise the secondary, until the racing sparks dissapear.
For a cilindrical primary, in a SGTC, it is better to have the primary located at the bottom of the secondary, with minimum height, to minimise the risk or pri-sec breakdown and some good safety distance between pri and sec (at least 4-5 cm).

I had racing arcs but got rid of that with corona dope.
The height is important to your system. You want to maximize your mutual inductance between the two coils, this will increase your k.
k= M/(L1L2)^.5
look for "Tesla Coil Tuning"
Then to maximize that all you're going to do is use some kind of high current source to ring the primary and measure the output of the secondary across a load resistance. I was just looking at this a couple of nights ago, but now I can't find it in my book.
