Awesome stuff guys. Yeah this is interesting, about the forces, I read that a helical lamp will actually try to untwist itself during the flash. I even saw a setup where the lamp lay on its coil, with the contact ends at each end sticking up in the air and attached to flexible braided wire to allow movement. I wonder if that was overkill. I can't imagine a quartz tube physically untwisting itself without cracking as you talked of. That is why I am still up in the air as to my exact design of mouning the tube, whether to support it ridgidly by its terminal ends pointing down or to lie it upside down on its coils as I saw in that setup and run flexible braided copper to it's ends whom are poking up in the air to allow it to do whatever it pleases.

Keep it real, guys! We are takling about a smallish laser flashtube here, not a quarter shrinker setup. The flourescent lifttime of ruby is more than 1ms (check ), and accordingly you can power it with a slow, low power pulse. Incidentially that is why you can get away lots of capacitance, inductance and resitance and a very low voltage in this circuit. I personally guarantee you that you will not encouter any of the destructive forces see e.g. in a quarter shrinker.
