i was makin the board for my flyback driver, and a half of the core fell on the floor, will the flyback still work if i glue the broken half back? if not can use a core from another flyback with sucess? also if i use the 555 based driver, can i hook it up to a primary and drive a sstc? please help me out with this situation all, thank you.

If you secure the core back together tight it should still work. I have flybacks where the core comes apart with a clamp holding the core quite losely together. They all work fine.

I have had this happen to me once. I just glued the core fragments back together and the flyback work just as well as it did before. Also what kind of 555 driver are you taking about? Generally solid state tesla coils uses feedback to control the drive frequency and not a fixed frequency that the 555 would produce. I think you might be confused about what exactly is a SSTC. a SSTC is an air core resonant transformer driven by solid state switching. A flyback is not air core but I have seen some sites saying that a flyback driver is a solid state telsa coil. Then agian stricly speaking the only 'true' tesla coil is a spark gap coil..

The 555 can be used as a simple SSTC driver. I use one running around 600Khz, tuned with a pot, which provides a signal for the usual inverting/noninverting driver ICs. Whats really neat, besides the super simplicity of the SSTC, is you can add quick audio modualtion by inputing an audio signal into pin5 of the 555. Reaching also has done some neat little SSTCs with the 555, I think he said he uses a air vairable cap for tuning though.

yes i am interested in trying to get a sstc running, from my thinking, they work by rectifying mains, and then using fets or igbt's(idk bout these) to run at the frequency required, am i right? yes sgtc is the best way to go in my opinion.

Ferrite cores can be glued back together with superglue. The tighter the glue joint the better flux path any gap increases the airgap and lower permitivity (ie inductance). Too much of a gap will tend to increase primary current which can overstress your switching device unless you are using current mode control (which will limit power transfer because of lower inductance)

i dont think this deserves a new thread and i want to post about it, my FB driver is non functional and im going to have to ask if there are any other easy 555 drivers using a single transistor, because i would like to have a fb driver and not get into major complications. any help is appreciated.(btw i tried to google this but results are far too broad).

Why don't you try the single transistor flyback driver?

Simple, cheap, reliable....

i would try this, but i also would like to get a general idea of sstc operation and i learn most things through experience so thats why i would like to know

visit either of the steve's sites, or richie burnetts site.
Richie's site has heaps of theory on SSTC's.
