I think the best choice for you is PWM driven push-pull converter. This can be done simply with SG3525 IC and few external parts. I also have a program to calculate this type of circuit, but unfortunately it's not in english. I can calculate for you, just say what power you need and what core you have...

Alternatively, for medium power, there's very good flyback circuit with NE555 - it can deliver about 50-60W from 12v supply using 22mm POT core.

What you need there is 555, three transistors and transformer. You don't need other parts until you want auto-off charging and battery indicator.
