I recently got interested in doing all sorts of non-electronics projects, mostly little internal combustion engines but also more general machining stuff. I bought a little benchtop lathe and I am currently stocking up on all sorts of other tools. Let me tell you, compared to metalworking tools, even a Tektronics 200MHz scope is cheap
This new hobby of mine beautifully integrates with electronics, since there is no machine that could not be improved by controlling it with a little Atmel chip or electrifying it in some other way. Lots of fancy HV projects also require a good deal of machining, so after I have mastered the basics I hope to get back to my railgun (and do it properly this time), and maybe try building a little linear accelerator / neutron source if I ever get to that stage of sophistication.
I think quite a few people here are also interested in that sort of thing, e.g. Andrew with his CNC mill and ... with the CNC laser IIRC.
So let's get get a beer and chat about machining for a bit, shall we?

Hehe, that's funny. One of the first things I did when I bought my bench mill (an RF-31) was to use it as a lathe, a tricky proposition.
Machining capability is a great addition to HV/science addictions. Problem is once you buy a machine there's suddenly a bajillion expensive add-ons you 'need'. I also have a railgun project that I've put on hold until I could machine proper stuff. I would love to CNC the mill but that's going to have to wait until I rob my next bank. Actually, I'd like to get a nice little bench lathe like you have there first.

The extent of my metalworking tools is a cordless drill and a dremel I can cut aluminum on my dads vintage Rockwell ShopSmith with decent accuracy, but that is only strait cuts and it is a PITA to get it set up.
But I trying a new solution, I found a place on ebay that sells CNC hours at $30/hr, going to send my first quote request in about 10 minutes (for the case to my RGB laser)
BTW, the CNC laser project got cancelled due to insufficient time. There just wasn't enough of a reason for me to have a way to blast very precisely positioned holes in a piece of metal (especially with only 1 100mj shot every few seconds).
