I just finished my 9.5" x 30" toriod constructed out of window screen and close line wire. It is pictured here sitting on top of the smaller toriod made from 6" aluminum duct which is on my 6" diameter secondary coil.

I have been wanting to try out a bigger toriod for some time now but just couldn't figure out a good way to make one this size. Back in the 1990s' the folks at Tesla Coil Builders of Richmond experimented with some ridiculously oversized toriods and got some amazing results. That's what started me on this project.

People who see my Tesla coil are usually most impressed by the secondary and say "It must have taken forever to wind that" . Actually that's the easy part as I'm sure lots of you know. This window screen toriod was vary time consuming to make but the cost of the material was low.

I'll have to wait till morning to try it out. It is after midnight here and if I run the coil now I might wake up the neighbors.

Looks nice. I take it that the window screen is fine wire mesh. Can you say what the wire spacing is and how you have cut it to fit around the frame.

Do you have lot of prickly bits?

Otherwise the double toroid looks to have similar dimensions to mine.

The toroid uses 24 circular wire loops that are 9.6 inches in diameter. Between the wire loops are strips of wire mesh that are 31" long and 4.5' wide in the middle and taper down to 2 inches at the ends. The ends join together at the inner circumference of the toroid. The wire mesh strips are tied to the wire loops with small pieces of 24 gauge steel wire.

Yes there are lots of prickly bits. Ideally I would want a toriod with a smooth surface but I think it will work good enough.

You can ask Dr Resonance advice, he used such big chicken wire toroids on his "Big Bruiser"

I finally got my coil tuned up with the big toriod now and what a difference ! This thing has given my Tesla coil a whole new personality. To start with, I had to switch to a secondary wound with 22 gauge wire just to get where I could tune it. The original one was wound with 25 gauge wire.

Performance wise, the old setup produced a lot of streamers that just went into the air and occasionally there would be a spark that would hit something 5 feet away. Now I have continuous bright arks that are always hitting things 5 to 6 feet away. They might go a little farther but the space in my garage is limited. Lastly I must say, If you want to make a big toroid coil perform you got to put some power to it. When I was using the small toroid only on my coil, increasing the power level didn't make much of a difference. With the addition of the big toroid, if I run at low power the performance is feeble but if I run at high power, it kicks but.

Just to give some perspective I'll list the specs.

DC resonant charging powered by two MOTs

Secondary: 6" diameter 35" long 1,250 turns of 22 gauge wire
Toroids: lower, 6"x19" upper, 9.5"x30"
Primary Coil: 12 turns taped at eleventh turn
Primary Capacitor: .04 mfd
Charging Reactor: 10 Henerys ( wound on 2 kva transformer core with air gap)
Spark Gap: rotary in series with "cylinder gap"

Finally, thanks vasil for the link to the chicken wire toroid. Lots of good pictures on that site. I wish I lived in California.
