After about 5 years of abstinence I am trying to get back into µ-Controllers. I don't have that DOS laptop with the Dave Tait programmer software anymore, so I tried upgrading to the JDM programmer running IC-Prog software
For some funny reason though, stuff does not work. If I start IC-PRog (even with no programmer connected to the RS232 port) I get an error saying "privileged instruction" and if I try burning a PIC the program crashes. I wonder if there is any other good software I could try running? I am on my girlfriends Windows 2000 PC, if that matters.
Oh, and is there a PIC programmer for Macintosh I could try?

Thanks for your reply. I did install "DriverLINX Port I/O Driver" which I suppose is what you are referring to. I also tried WinPicProg and PonyProg without success now, so I guess I will have to debug my programmer some. Maybe changing component values at will was not such a good idea after all

OK, I hope you guys set me on the right path. The problem with the other programmers I tried was that they had no option for "JDM Programmer" so I could not set them up correctly. I kind of sucks when you don't know whether the problem is the computer (some modern computers don't have enough voltage on the RS232, correct?), the programmer or the software...

I had some problems with ICSP using a JDM. I had to turn it down to a really low clock, otherwise I didn't get enough power to program it. It was suggested to me to externally power it instead of using the computer's COM port's power, but I haven't tried that yet. I recently picked up a ICD-2 which I'm hoping will solve a lot of my problems after talking to some Microchip people at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose.

You guys fucking rule! After installing the WinNT driver (which I had previously failed to notice) and following the instructions, everything works fine now.
Thanks!
BTW, the JDM is highly recommended for minimal parts count and RS232 is a lot more comon that parallel port anyway.

Tried WinPic800 () yet? It beats Icprog when it comes to device support, user interface and programmer options. It will even program dsPICs with a JDM. It can also autoidentify the PIC connected to the programmer and show a short summary of the datasheet of the chosen PIC. It is also regularly updated. IMO Icprog simply sucks compared to WP800.
