I have succesfully interfaced with a pick and place robot I have acquired. It will do my bidding. Work envelope is 60*70cm, resolution is 0.01mm and mechanical and electrical repeatability is 0.05mm. It is fast: about 2m/s traverse speeds. Did I mention it is fast? It is also built with industrial grade mechanics and will be very suitable for very good CNC routing. It came with two 5phase 350W stepper motors, direct belt drive and 2400N nominal load linear bearings.

Check out the video ( 9,8Mb ) Here

I am going to have so much fun :D

NIICCCEEE!!

how about a CO2 laser! ;D That would make your power bill a bit rediculous, but I think it would be pretty cool with a laser.

Wooot, You will have too much fun... =)

So next I wager a guess it’s a cutting coolant pump, vacuum tailing removal, and a sound suppression cabinet.

What CAM driver software do you use?
What’s the total travel distances (x,y,z)?

Rapid traverse CNC stuff is great, isn't it? =)

600mm x 700mm is amazing... what's the Z-travel, or is it only a two-and-a-half-axis machine? (e.g. Z axis is either "down" or "up")

I've had the privelege of working with a 25W CO2 laser laser cutter, 600mm x 550mm working area. Its max travel rate is probably ~10m/s... ridiculous. Annoys me a bit, because all the stuff is BELT-DRIVEN, and these aren't non-extensible kevlar-fibre belts or anything - they're semi-rubbery poly-god-knows-what-ylene.

When you're cutting very thin material at 25W, you've got to go fast to compensate for the thickness! I worry about its repeatability; belt stretch issues, overshooting, undershooting etc. The accel/decel curve is excessively steep, and the whole bench shakes when it starts stops... feels like the lens/carriage are staying still and it's moving the whole world (including the rest of the machine), somestimes.

Your robot looks very nice - none of this fabricated sheet metal rubbish, all machined aluminium! Heavy! I love it! =)

enjoy

It's interesting to note that the resolution you stated on that robot is about one wavelength of CO2 laser light. You're almost at the point where accuracy will be limited by the optics of the laser rather than the mechanical parts.

Well at the moment it is X and Y travel only, and I have yet to reach the limits of how fast the thing will move. But the weight moving around at such speeds makes my table wobbly so I do not dare to go the full monty yet. It still needs a good Z-axis and a proper Linux/EMC controller, but hey, I am not complaining!

What I am planning to do is PCB routing and building speakers.

I will keep you posted.

building speakers?

mwah.

I've got parts enough for a cnc driver now too ( drawwing/foamcutting).
I only miss the driver and need to build it
but I hope to get the driver ic's (l297 & l298) soon.

After that I hope to make a cnc for making pcb's with a multitool oid.

you ever consider making it a small buisness?
the computer modding community has been raving for acrylic windows for a while now. and if you could rout a design into them.......they would eat it up.

Yes I have considered making it a business. I am still considering it. Custom PC modding is high on my list as well. But I still need to do a lot of work on it so I do not want to get ahead of myself.
