But since the devices absorbs a lot of visible light you are making the room darker. What you have made a visible to far IR converter. The red LED just modifies the absorbtion spectrum with a tiny amount.

So in short it does the same as a bit of black paper with a red dot on it. See if you can find something white that passes a lot of IR to cover the PIN diodes with.

A sheet of TP works.

Remember that the vote should be for the neatest, cheapest, most powerful, and generally most clever energy harvesting device.

This is probably the most chaotic thread on the forum so it takes some time to figure out what to vote for. My vote goes to ShawnLG for his waste IR to visible converter.

Before this thread dies out, I pick shawnLG's monitor-powered LED out of chaos.

I't s pretty powerful, easy and was quite unexpected to me. When I tried it (with a coil of much smaller dimensions) I couldn't get a led lit at all...

BTW, I hope to make more people vote... if this thread deserves any more life.

Not much imagination buy when it comes to size, this joule theif is unlike any other. Threading fly hair thin wire through a needle size hole was not eazy. wink

I like this even though it isn't free energy. neutral

People aren't voting much for a reason, please consider this as helpful food for thought for future contests. I know you guys are smarter than you sound at times and are probably pretty decent guys, however, your credibility, as far as being able to run a fair contest, came into question in some member's minds when the 4hv.org judges insisted... nay, demanded that slave labor be considered a viable form of alternative energy in the previous $5000 contest, eventho the original rules clearly stated no MAN MADE energy (before any clarification mods). That sort of behavior and interpretation of alternative energy isn't considered credible even on the "Weirdo Bermuda triangle, Tesla was an alien, pyramid power sites", even much less at 4hv.org where we strive to be above that sort of thing. Next, a moderator announced to the membership that the $5000 contest would definitely not be cancelled, and within a few short days, it was cancelled because this isn't a 'site for game shows', yet the FREE ENERGY contest was permitted to continue. Unequal application of the rules? Confusing to some members. One of the members (me) was reprimanded for using the word "Mono-pole" as being a bad 'buzz word' for the goggle spider, when simultaneously the moderator who was making the criticism was operating this current contest using the words "FREE ENERGY" in the title, recently more wisely changed to Ambient Energy. Inconsistent behavior, on again, off again decisions, unequal applications of the rules to some and not others, is perceived by more than just a few members as out-of-control and some-what amateurish reflecting on a site which is otherwise nearly perfect. A few members emailed me asking is anyone truly at the helm? My reply is yes, but it appears that a couple of the moderators appear to be in a steep learning curve on developing the skills to moderate a site more equitably... more experience and learning to apply the rules uniformly to all, should take care of these problems with time. The above is constructive insight into how this great site can become even better. I assume helpful intentioned comments from members are still accepted on this site and this post will not be deleted, modified, or locked down again. Btw, this thread is almost dead in terms of voting, let's get this contest over with, I vote for Shawn, give the Luxeon to him. CM

CM,
Once you've been around here for a while you will realise that we have many competitions;
very few are serious, very few reach an incontestible result, all provide a forum for discussion and learning.

The usual 'prize' is kudos from others

Almost all 'competitions' arise because one or more of us are personally interrested in some or other topic
and we like to see other peoples interpretations and contributions
(and occasionally show-off a bit) cheesey

Few of us have the time or resources to dedicate to a true 'competition' so we contribute what we have to hand
and each of us has our own interpretation of what's involved/important.

Provided everyone stays positive and constructive we all learn something

I really enjoy this 4HV forum for the way it's run/moderated,
and the attitudes, skills and experiemces we all share.

So if we don't take things too seriously or personally we all win.

(Hidden message = "Lighten up and enjoy!" )

P.S. Don't under-estimate the intellectual resources available in our membership,
there are a lot of clever people here,
most of whom do not feel the need to advertise their abilities.

I'm voting for my weight driven generator...
no mod or admin said anything about not entering something already made.
