I have some magnetic viewing paper that shows the flux lines. Here it is Thanks. Btw, for those replicating this experiment, I recommend you purchase THESE exact magnets to reduce variables such as different manufacturers quality control issues, etc. Good luck, let us know your results!

Assuming that the effect is due to the magnetic field (or rather the derivative of the field, which is really what attracts or repels stuff), and not some other mysterious effect, I would say the bigger the magnet the better. The ones used by CM are only of strength N38, fairly weak compared to the N50 magnets also available. They are also not that big.
Still, in order to boost the magnetic field density by another order of magnitude or so, it would be useful to provide an iron flux return path. A CC transformer core would do the job, pole shoes would further increase the flux density. I am talking about a construction like this:

Interestingly, the candle flame deflects most noticeably with these particular magnets compared to many other neos that I have, in different sizes and shapes, and some considerably larger. The other neos in my collection don't produce as noticeable of a deflection to the flame. I can't say exactly why, but it may support the idea that the geometry of the magnet plays a role. CM
