Ok, so I wound up at AfroTech and found out they had a forum. Warning, they seem to have no qualms about stupid posts and profanity; makes me appreciate 4HV all the more.
The only good post in this thread is the first one, and the setup was pretty crude, but I thought the idea was pretty neat. Homemade laser scanner. ,4165.0.html
They also had a link to a schematic search engine: Kind of neat, but Google might still prove more useful provided you know how to use it.

BTW, that comment has absolutley nothing to do with the fact that Matt makes ultrasonic-probe scanners for a living
Also, this isn't the first laser scanner to be released. And the software isn't the coolest. But whatever, a lot of work went into making it and for that they deserve all the credit in the world
As to the schematic search engine, a lot of the entries are spam, just links to a appnote or general idea. But it might come in handy if you have no idea where to start and looking for ideas.

LOL, funny, but untrue. I don't make touchprobe scanners for a living. I make fourth-axis stages that are used in the MILLING of original artwork. How you'd do that with a touchprobe scanner eludes me, so I won't even try and sell you one. =P heehee
Although laser scanners suck in certain applications, they're a million times faster than touchprobe scanners and give ADEQUATE resolution for SOME applications... for most people the speed is the biggest factor, hence laser > touchprobe. :P
wrote ... Unfortunately, laser scanners falter when presented with refractive, reflective, translucent, or highly absorbent surfaces.
There are some interesting solutions out there for OEMs, such as http://www.surphaser.com/3d_laser_scanner_OEM.html, but the problem with these systems is that they always force you to use their proprietary software, and sometimes proprietary file formats...
Building a system from scratch doesn't have ANY of those problems hehe
