With thousands of refers coming from myspace every month, I decided I had to do something...

They were pretty much all using hi-res versions of the photos on my website for backgrounds, eating away my bandwidth!

So I 'redesigned' a few peoples profiles for them, I'm sure they'll all love the new look cheesey

(edit - only two left now)

Ahh, good old immature fun. That lot is only from 1 days worth of logfiles. I actually feel a bit guilty, as some of them were good profiles. 'were' being the keyword here. It'll be interesting to see how long the excellent new design lasts...

Haha, that's excellent. I'd say they got off too easily.

I'm not sure how you're hosted, but if you have the ability to use mod_rewrite, it's a relatively simple matter to prevent hotlinking. I've done it for 4hv.org, to prevent similar problems. Beats killing your photo gallery. If you're interested, I can post the code here on how to do it.

Ugh, myspace. I can't even put into words how much myspace sucks. If I was rich, I would buy it just so I could shut it down. It's a disgusting pile of putrid trash that should be an embarassment to our society.

I'd be interested to see the code you're using... not sure if I would be able to do it on this hosting, but it might come in handy in the future.

I decided to set myself a Flickr account up in the end, it seems a decent enough site.

All I had to do was put the attached code in a .htaccess file at my root web directory:

Which forces any remote linked images to appear as this image:
Denied

It's especially fun when people try to remote link files on 4hv for use as avatars or signature files, as they end up looking completely retarded.

You'll also need a .htaccess file in the /errors/ directory that contains the line "RewriteEngine Off" or the rewrite engine goes into an infinite loop.

Hope that helps.

Hope that helo

I had the same problem. Turns out one of my water drop photos, "Blood-drip" was being used as a background on Myspace on the sites of hundreds of gothic wannabee vampire people. Weird.

I thought that, since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, you would all be pleased that your hard work was being shown to such a large audience without the embarrassment of having your name attached to it.
(Is there a smiley for "irony"?)

I assume that the frontloader building the pile of tires is yours. That's AWESOME. Really.. If you want me to, I will take a picture of my bare ass right now and send it to you to post. The sites might actually get taken down from the complaints. Man that's great.

I know this is so an un-elite question, but how do you guys figure out who's hotlinking you?
