Hey guys, I'm getting a paintball gun tomorrow, I don't have but about $150 to spend total (including balls) and I plan to play about 4-5 times a year, and I wonder if this is OK. I just want a gun I won't hate.
Because of the good reviews on most of their products, I'm planning on getting a Spyder, probably an Xtra. I don't shoot much when I play, so I think I'll stick with the 12oz tank (based on 600 shots per tank?) until I find I need more. Semi-auto is fine for me because I'm not really a "hoser." Also, I really think I should get an aftermarket barrel, but I have no idea what to look for in that.

I'm assuming your friends do paintball so airsoft isn't really an option, but it's probably a better choice for someone on a budget. An airsoft game costs you a few bucks, whereas a paintball game costs you the price of a tank of CO2, and the price of the paint.. That can be 10 or 20 dollars if you're using semi auto guns. It can be a lot cheaper if you use a pump, which can actually be very fun and rewarding if you have a good one (provided that you don't suck, which is hard to avoid when you're starting out).
Don't skimp on the quality of the paint you buy. There's nothing worse than having to continuously clean out your barrel or turn down your velocity because the cheapass walmart balls you bought keep breaking.

I think I'll stick with semi-auto, I'm going against full-auto but I don't think it will be a huge challenge. I think pump would kill me. Since I don't have anyone to play with except a few times a year, 10-20 will be alright. Thanks for the reply, good advice!

buy a 98 custom, and a 20oz co2 tank, its a cheap setup but it works. Its what I have and You can upgrade it to a hardcore paintbrawling machine if You want to.

I'd second the advice to pick up a 98 custom if you can find one in your budget. The "beginner' packages at walmart have everything you need but the paint, and run right around $160. The 98 custom can become a very competitive marker without a whole lot of work. They're tough as nails too. I'm about to buy an E-bolt 98 Custom to get back into paintball after a 3 year break.

That sounds like some good advice. My first gun was a brass eagle which I don't recomend. The 98 custom is cheap and decent like Benguy said. I use an autococker now which was somewhat expensive and required a barrel upgrade because the stock one was worthless. I haven't played in over a year because of the prices at the fields and the amount of paint at use at them. The game can be cheap if you get some friends together and just play in the forest instead of some fancy paint wasting course. It's also a lot more fun that way too. They seem to be geared for less stealth and more spray and pray type tactics so they sell more paint. Unfortunaltly for me I don't know enough people who play anymore.

Yeah, most courses are speedball only any more. I've played speedball once and wont again. In my opinion its an utterly pointless game.
I only play woodsball, and I'm working on getting a club going on Robins AFB. There is over 10,000 acres of forest on base. I'm hoping if I can get 20 or 30 interested people together, the base will loan us a 100 acre chunk to turn into a couple woodsball courses.
I've always found woodsball to be more noob friendly. You dont get hit 8 times in the same spot usually, you aren't eliminated the instant the game starts, and you dont burn $100 worth of paint a day.

I don’t know if you've been to the store yet but I shoot a wgp trilogy which I think is the cheapest autococker around but its really accurate. I've hit kids all the way across the speedball field with it but that’s more luck than skills on my part ;) I'd suggest a 20oz Co2 because even if you don't shoot that much it might get annoying to fill it up all the time where as with 20oz I might shoot 1200 paintballs before I need to refill but it does get a little heavy. Also you should get a neck guard and wear a hat when you play cause getting hit on the top of the head is kinda hard. Oh and buy gloves as well.

Thanks guys. I wound up getting a Spyder Xtra which has turned out to be everything I wanted it to be. I got together with my cousins and their friend's cousins and we had a blast this morning. I got a 20oz tank, 2000pballs (decent quality too, they were on the clearance table.) The gun and everything else for $162. Funny you should mention the Tippmann 98 custom. The family that went against my family all had those, we all had a Spyder of some sort. I would agree that the Tippmanns are very good guns. In fact, my dad's is thinking about getting that gun, now I'll have to tell him all of you signed off on it. There were three Tippmann 98's, my Spyder Xtra, a Spyder Pilot full auto, and various other Tippmann & Spyder guns; I heard no complaints of malfunction, or paint exploding in the barrel. Excepting the time the mudball got stuck in the end of my barrel, shooting a couple more rounds cleaned that out.
Like I said, I don't shoot much. The games ended when everyone ran out of CO2, except me. I had 3/4 of my tank left and had only shot approx. 250 balls and made just as many kills as they had. Most of the others had emptied 2 20oz CO2 tanks each. Geez. I was still all worked up and ready, but no one to shoot back! Phooey. It was all good though, I may look like a person who's really in shape but I was about to croak. I haven't done anything that strenous in a while. We did get a good three hours in.
Also, I would have to say (if anyone else is reading this) that the 20oz is great, but is heavy enough to be annoying. I thought my gun was a little too inaccurate, but I don't know if that was the barrel or the paintballs or both. I think it was the paintballs to be honest because it didn't seem to work any better in some of the other, nicer, guns.
Nick's right, gloves, neck guard and a hat are a necessity.

You might consider getting a drop forward or a remote line.. A drop forward will help balance out the gun (making it feel a bit lighter), but a remote line is even better.. You can get the tank completely out of the way, so A) you don't have to lug it with your hands, and B) it's not in the way while you're laying down in your base or wherever.
