The tree one flashed really bright because there was one long conected flame. In the first part of the video the flames were seperated a bit and flickered in the middle. When the flame made one uninterupted path from wire to wire it turned into a power arc. I have messed around with my MOTs and candles/wood and have seen similar things occur (just not as big).
The crane reminded me of a sheet i was handed at work, It detailed electical accidents on construction sites. The most common thing mentioned was dumptruck drivers. When the buckets hit power lines the drivers first reaction is to jump out of the truck. Of cource when his feet hit the ground and his hand(s) are on the door he becomes the shortest path to ground.

Here's one of the ones I was thinking of. If I recall correctly, that's a half million volt line. They're supposed to switch them when the power is off, but obviously that didn't happen. In the original you can hear people cheering when the arcing stops.

"The utility company installed these wires too close"
I would say wind or a car hitting a pole caused that
"What happend here?"
Cop car touched the downed line and the line touched a sewer grate or other large gounded object. When ever I am working at a site where the service is being switched no on is alowed to watch the hydro workers as they do it. That way if it screws up we don't all go blind.

Awesome vids
We used to have regular powercuts here, several a year, caused by an exploding cable under the road..! I don't know what caused it, but it apparently would just keep going in different places. Seemed unusual for a cable that is buried, eventually they just replaced the whole lot. The last major powercut was caused by a pole pig fire in a nearby field, I missed all of it.
When there are major supply problems, they sometimes install a huge (container sized) diesel generator hooked right up to the lines, and whole nearby area goes off-grid!
