Hmm, you're right, RS have them, but they're quite expensive (£ 10 each from RS UK, £ 16 for the "D") You could try TV HOTs, as they're available up to 1400v. There's a variant of the Royer circuit that uses a feedback winding to get a high current low voltage drive for BJT bases. If you want to be pedantic, that's actually the original Royer oscillator, and our MOSFET version is the variant.

But then who would do a dumb thing like driving a flyback with TV HOTs wink

hmm, a sstc running off 230volt with the original zvs circuit?? i cant believe that. i simulated the whole original circuit and you always have a drain voltage of around 800volts with 300volt input. dont know if tvs will solve the problem cause i dont know how to simulate them, but they behave like zenerdiodes and when i simulate it with them the oscillation stops immediatly.

i thought of replacing the choke coil with a capacitor to regulate the current draw but the only thing you get on 300volt dc is a current of 100mA through the coil with a voltage of 5 or 10 volts or so.

i wanted to build the circuit without using 1200volt mosfets or igbts but i think its hopeless

The SSTC with the Mazzilli driver is here:

http://www.geocities.com/teslinasite/oltcp.html

I used also BUPs for my DRSSTCs: BUP307 (good for up to 35 A) for my halfbridges and BUP 314 (for up to 52 A) for fullbridges. They work OK, overdriving the gates at 30 V.

http://www.geocities.com/l_vasiliu/drsstc.html

I am still thinking at a possibility to run the thing at 220 V. I have to make a drawing. The problem is that I am not an EE guy. I can adapt and make things from junk, but not designing a circuit......

Ok, the idea is to double the resonating voltage in the primary circuit, to obtain longer sparks. In fact I would not feed it with 220 V but only with 110 V, but the sparks would be as long as the 220 V ones. It is just a combination between Mazzilli driver and the 1:1 autotransformer idea from the VTTCs. The source for IGBT gates is separate:

http://www.geocities.com/gemaria_ro/trysch.html

The LC parallel circuit in the primary tank would oscillate at doubled voltage? Feeding with 110 v, the primary voltage will go to 220V or higher? This would imply high spikes on IGBTs too? I would want a simulation before frying some expensive (for me) IGBTs...A EE guy head is better than mine.. wink

..OK, just post the current schematic you have. Screenshot, drawing, anything? cheesey

I know vasil's SSTC for a while, and it seems to perform great, with tuning being only harder thing with it.

One nice IGBT I saw was Link2, only 10 amps but considering 230V mains operation it's a heck lot more than needed to pwn even toughest flybacks. Small TO262 package is also cute.
Only thing is that I have no clue where to get these ill

TV HOT's are usable, although current ratings are often smaller even than those small IGBT's up there.

Lot of HOT's also have a small-value pulldown resistor already built in, seemingly to reduce fall time in low-duty cycle flyback operation.

In royer, it would end as a toast.
