First day at new job

Just started a new job yesterday for a company that makes WiMax radio front-end chips.. Lots of work at 2.5 and 3.5GHz! I'll be designing and constructing radio cards and helping customers build radios with our front-end chips.. Should be fun, but it'll mean less posting on the Forum...

The company has lots of cool instruments to play with too!

EDIT: What are other members doing for a crust (or studying at uni)??

Well I was working at Ortel over the summer (internship) helping a few PhD's design/build a THz spectrometer. I did some mechanical work (my boss would tell me to make a part that will do this, that, and the other thing and then I made it in solidworks) and electrical work (my boss needed a circuit that would give a 0-250ma sine wave at 0.1-4khz).

Now I am back in Jr. year in high school, and when I am not doing homework I am building lasers. Or helping my family remodel the house.

My primary source of income atm is mowing the lawn at my house. I got a really reat deal; the gardners were charging $200/month (it is a 3/4acre lot) so my parents offered me $100

Im working for an electical contractor. Lately that means putting in 347v lighting.

Next year I'm studying electrical engineering at the university of technology, sydney.

I've done a lot of CAD/CAMM/CNC work with two-and-half axis engravers, three-axis uber-deathmills, four-axis micromills and a 40W carbon-dioxide deathray, mostly for industrial rapid prototyping.. I've developed workholding fixtures/hold-down techniques for use in CNC jewelrymaking with Roland DG's smaller mills.

Some of my other work involved developing cheap, manufacturable edge-lit optics for advertising and signage.

Electronics has been sprinkled throughout, such as building a totally new controller for our three-axis deathmill (I cheated, used MachIII software/boards as a base), stepper motor drivers, but generally simple stuff... which is why I'm looking forward to studying.

I want to be like Steve, Bill, Dan, or Steve ^^

Studying. But if I'm lucky and skillful enough, I will glassblow micro-Alchemy sets as thoughtful gift items and make bank. I already have a few small things, but I need a lot more practice before I can go to market.

Finishing current contractual obligations and being released from non-disclosure bindings soon. Government jobs have some pretty sweet perks like access to really big toys â€“ but one often will have to wait until someone retires to get promoted. Accordingly, it is a lot of responsibility and looks great in a portfolio.

I may decide to go back to the university campus for more fun next year. Less of a hassle to get things done in my area of interest and some margin of privacy.

Remember the â€œNewâ€ guy always starts at the bottom. Keep quiet until you know exactly what is going on.

I'm at uni.

Last year I worked at our electrical utility hacking at some market simulation code in PASCAL. (About as exciting as it sounds but it was cool to be paid to do programming.)

Before that I worked at the electronics retailer Jaycar. (That's like a Radioshack that stocks decent stuff and hires cluey staff.)

This year in January I'll get to play with a radio telescope. That should be fun with lots of boxes with blinking lights and wires hanging out. If anything good comes out of that I'll post here.

I'm rebuilding a website and its horrific database for the local Buddhist center. I have no idea how much I will make, the understanding was that I will get paid to learn how this stuff works and build their site at the same time. It's working beautifully now and I should have it done by tomorrow.

Well I started off at uni studying software engineering, then spent my 3rd year on placement working in an electronics lab, writing C code for little 8 bit micros. Towards the end of the placement year, I ended up getting more involved in the electronics, and ended up completing a project which was to add bluetooth to an existing product. That's when I started taking electronics a bit more seriously, and I ended up completing my dissertation on compression algorithms in cheap embedded devices, it was more of an excuse to mess about with micros and eeprom memory. I still occasionally go back to help the company out with stuff, but they cannot find any permanent use for me so I've got to move on and find a permanent job, in either electronics or some area of computing.

Interestingly, I made my first coilgun on my desk at work when I was bored - and a few weeks later I joined 4hv!
