Call me a skeptic. Metallic hydrogen has long been assumed to compose most of Jupiter. People have been claiming and debunking its observation in laboratories for decades. The article cited in OP is the first time I read about MH possibly being metastable at normal pressure and temperature (?). Perhaps plausible. Does anyone think that playing up potential applications could bring in more grant money for the researchers?

MH is indeed strange. Its been suggested that infinite chains might have an MH component at somewhat lower pressures in the MPa range.
