I've been wondering for a few years if a strong permanent magnet, say a neodynium magnet, would effect the tragetory of naturally occuring ions in our air. That is, if a neo-magnet is placed outside suspended a few feet in the air by fishing line, would the magnetic field have any effect on the travel course of the positively charged ions or negatively charged ions in the air as they "float" through or nearby the magnetic field? Yes, it would (Provided that they were moving through the field). Of course, since you can't see the ions, it would be difficult to see that the magnet was having an effect.

Right, I'm aware that strong magnetic fields generated by Electromagnets can effect the travel tragetory of ions... I just wasn't sure that magnetic fields produced by permanent magnets did the same. I've heard it discussed both ways resulting in yes and sometimes no to the permanent magnet question... so am double checking here where all the smart people hang out :) Anyone else wish to comment on this question? You probably won't be able to observe the affect with ions in air, however I might suggest getting a nice fat xenon flashtube and hooking it up to a ccfl inverter and then holding a magnet next to the tube. You can see the plasma be moved around, even split it in two ;)

I did something similar to ... idea, but instead I used a big acrlyic tube, a vacuum pump, and an ignition coil. The attached picture shows the beam being split in two by a magnet.

There is no difference between the magnetic field produced by electromagnets and that produced by permanent magnets.. Electromagnets allow for e-z variation in the field...
Putting a Crookes tube inside of a Helmholtz coil is a typical demo given in beginning uni physics classes.. The tube contains a low-pressure gas (so you can see the electron beam) and varying the coil current causes the beam to sweep around.
Also, based on the same idea but with the right equipment, it is possible to construct a mass spectroscopy machine (for detection of compounds/isotopes...)

I have to ask (especially for the people who told you no), how would the ions know the difference between a magnetic field generated by an electromagnet and that made by a permanent magnet?
You can see electron paths being changed by putting a permanent magnet near a CRT screen, but this is strongly discouraged for any color TV or monitor you care about, because it can magnetize the shadow mask, which messes things up and may be hard to demagnetize. The old-timey monocrome CRT's don't have the shadow mask, so you can put magnets around them all day without causing problem.
