Sobering to think, that some areas of the turbine hall will still yield a lethal dose with tens of hours of exposure. The "elephant's foot" apparently is so radioactive that photos taken show a strange mottling effect... needless to say you don't want to go anywhere near it although one brave scientist did and lived to tell the tale.

The dose rate shown on the GM Counter (GMC) in the picture with parasol mushroom is approximately 100 times greater than the average background dose in the UK.
At the risk of generalisation, 20 μSv/hr gamma can be expected to produce fast/very fast rapid clicking on GMCs with a full sized tube.
