Hi.
I did not post here for quite a long time so i thought i could share my new Nixie Clock.

DSC 1570 Zpsdogosh3a

DSC 1542 Zpsii894wqf

DSC 1543 Zpsbfl6pkpw

DSC 1545 Zps31kqpqjl

I built 2 similar clocks - the one in the first pic just has black sockets.

Nothing special. IN-14 Tubes, Arduino + RTC, NE555 "HV" generator.
Self made double sided PCB (layout and etching)

Regards, Daniel

Niice work. Love the fact you didn't opted for LEDs under the tubes (as many do) Looks much more old school this way

Cheers smile

Thanks! cheesey

Some people use leds to illuminate the bottom of the Nixie tube. But i don't like this at all.

A few days ago i ordered some Z566M tubes. Those are coated with a red varnish which can be removed easily as described on this german website: Link2
What do you guys think, should i remove the varnish or should i keep it??

RateReducer, since it is easier to remove than to re-apply the red varnish
maybe build it red and if you do not like it then take the irreversible step.

Love anything with Nixie's too, I don't think people will look at l.e.d's in that manner in another 50 years time. Really nice build also by the way.

The red varnish is there to give better contrast isn't it? So easier to read in bright light, if its not badly scratched or pealing off, see how it looks first.
You can light one up as a test if your worried about not be able to remove it once their fixed to the board.

How does it keep its time? Is it just relying on a register/counter that crystal clocked, or does it sync to some external time standard?

Thanks, TwirlyWhirly555. I also think clear tubes look better (on the pictures). I have not seen any caoted tubes in real life jet. Maybe they look good ^^

Sulaiman, thats the way to go! Thanks!

I will find out ^^
i use a RTC (real time clock). That´s a temperature compensated clock module with a battery also known as hardware clock.

Today i received my Z566M tubes smile

The left tube is a IN-14.
Seems that the contrast of the red tube is better.
