Ive got an old advance siginal generator that can only go to 40Khz.
I guess this should be OK for testing my UD board, but do you have to put out the same frequency as the intended operating frequency of the coil?

I have a Tektronix 561A scope that is rated at 10 MHz, i believe you need a 100 MHZ scope to show alot more detail in the signal from what i read, but dont really understand alot about this, since my coil will be running ar 68 KHz, which is well under 10 MHz.

Am i going to need a higher frequency scope and generator?

I do have a friend who has a new Rigol digital scope that i can test with if needbe.

Hi nzoomed,

One of the main reason why you need higher Bandwidth oscilloscope is to get better view / zoom in function per time interval. With higher bandwidth you can see smaller steps of what is happening on the signal being observed.

100 Mhz = 2 nanosecond steps (means , you can see what is happening in the signal between 2 ns)

10 Mhz = 1 us steps (means, you can only see what is happening in the signal between 1 us) and there is a lot of missing detail compared to 2 ns steps, a lot of distortion , sag, etc.,that can happen between 1 us.

For testing purpose, you may want to use higher Freq (~100khz) signal gen so to check that the UD can drive your 68khz coil easily, you can google 555 timer functions as your input. It is not necessary to use sine wave form signal , you can use square wave from 555 timer and make it swinging between zero (as AC) using capacitor divider referencing to the middle point.

Hope it helps. thanks.

OK, i understand that better now.

Ive found a signal generator i can borrow for the time being anyway.

Your right, its probably better i do use a square wave, since its essentially what will be driving the IGBT's from the driver board anyway.

I had been thinking of making a frequency doubler for use with my generator with a 555.

Ok, just to clarify, the waveform signal output from our UD is a Square Wave and the signal getting to our UD's Feed back is a sine wave.
Goodluck coiling!

Square wave input to the feedback should be fine for testing if the driver works. I'll recommend testing the board at the intended operating frequency. You may need to adjust C33. Regardless, I'll recommend picking up a signal generator say on ebay or your local 2nd hand place. A good scope is always a wise investment if you plan to be doing serious stuff in electronics in the future. I recommend a Rigol DS1054z which is the best value scope on the market today. Good luck!

Something else i was going to ask is how cruical it is to scope the bus output?
Since i dont have an isolation transformer, i wont be able to do this unless i can find one that can handle enough amps.

They are virtually a thing of the past nowdays with RCD's
