I've searched the net looking for a large inductor in the general range of 50H (Henry, not mH) that is wound with wire capable of handling 2000v. No luck. I suppose because of its large H value, its not a common component. Can anybody point me in the right direction for such an inductor?

Use several smaller inductors in series.

When wired in series the inductances add together.

The voltage accross each inductor will also be reduced to 2000V/n, where n is the number of series inductors used.

It all depends on how much current it should handle. Three or so MOT secondaries in series is a cheap and easy way to do it, if that solution fulfills all your other requirements in addition to inductance and voltage.

As others have said, we need more specs.

Maximum current?

Maximum temperature rise?

Continuous operation vs. small duty cycle? Former could be a thermal limit, latter could be a saturation limit.

Frequency?

Is 2000V required between adjacent wire turns, as implied in OP? smile Or between layers, or between the inductor terminals, or isolation between inductor and case?

Size, weight, cost constraints?

Surplus Sales of Nebraska has chokes.

UTC was famous for their construction.

Look for swinging chokes, or chokes from old transmitters, example Gates, Harris, etc.

There are also loads of chokes ~7.5H-10H sold for old Fender guitar amps on Ebay.

It depends on the application whether you need a gapped inductor, I think. (That's my current understanding) Is it for DC or AC?

Ash, Fender/Marshall/HiWatt, any of those audio rated chokes are not insulated for much over 500V.

What he is looking for is a plate choke out of an old transmitter, obviously for a large power supply he is building.

Yes, but say you had five 10H chokes in series the voltage over each would be 400V.

A lot of these chokes sold for old tube guitar amps are only ~7.5H, so seven would be needed for 50H, reducing the voltage accross each to less than 300V.

If GR can't find a 50H, 2000V choke he has options wink

EDIT: I believe Steve Connor used four in series for his resonant charging SGTC, which ran off two rectified MOT's at 10kV, each choke had 2.5kV accross it with no problems, although they are only rated for around 500V.

I have been watching a giant inductor item # 171547694101 on ebay. It's$$$ but I don't see a rating. There are phone no.s to call.

Also, what about the secondary of a neon sign transformer?

Depends upon the currint rating. GR hasn't provided that info yet wink
