No, no offence. I probably did have the worst experience, but then again, I was carrying tens of amps at hundreds of volts; in absolute terms the transients get worse as the volts and amps go up (to a point, eventually you hit slew rate on the controller above a hundred volts or so); I usually never had a major problem below 30 volts supply or so.

I find that ground and signal planes are slightly better than twisted pair mostly, but layout is absolutely critical. I'd strongly recommend finding a manufacturers reference MOSFET design and using that, it's instructive how they use ground and signal planes and route the gate signal.

And yeah, measurement is really difficult; a lot of the critical things have to be measured in differential mode with two probes, and any minor discrepancies between the probes causes artefacts.

The other gotcha is that the circuit can be working, but ringing; most high-low side controller components have high speed clamp diodes built into them; but it's a bad idea to rely on them too hard because they have limited power dissipation; it will work for a while, and then fail. You actually do have to measure stuff in differential mode to check your design.
